Your computer includes a program called the Basic Input Output System (BIOS) that gives you control over memory options, the boot order and extra security features. One of those features is the ability to create or change an administrator password, which is also known as a user password. Adding an administrator password requires any user to know the password in order to access the operating system on the hard drive. For security reasons you may want to periodically change the password, which must be done through the BIOS menu.
- Close any windows or software open on the computer's screen. Open the "Start" menu and click the "Shut Down" entry. Wait for the operating system to shut off and press the computer's power button to start the boot up process.
- Wait for the text "Press F1 to Enter Setup" or the manufacturer's logo to appear on the screen. Tap the "F1" key to bring up the BIOS utility menu.
- Press the right arrow key to navigate through the BIOS headings to the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down to the "Set Administrator Password" entry, which may also be listed as the "Set User Password" entry in some BIOS versions. Press "Enter."
- Type the computer's current administrator password and hit "Enter." Type the new administrator password you want to use in the text box and press "Enter" to confirm your choice.
- Access the tab named "Exit" and scroll down to the "Exit Saving Changes" entry. Depending on your BIOS version, it may instead read "Save Changes and Exit." Press "Enter" and choose "Yes." Tap "Enter" again to save the new password and restart the computer.
